Blue Cross to cover the cost of a limited number of at-home rapid COVID-19 tests for commercial members effective Jan. 15

Beginning January 15, 2022 and continuing through the end of the COVID-19 federal public health emergency, Blue Cross will cover the cost of a limited number of at-home rapid COVID-19 tests. This coverage applies to members who have health insurance either through their employer or the individual market. This does not apply to Medicare or Minnesota Health Care Program (Medicaid, MinnesotaCare) plans. 

In order to receive an at-home test at no cost, bring the test kit to the pharmacy counter (not the front registers) at a preferred pharmacy and show your member ID card or pharmacy benefit card.

Beginning January 15, 2022 and continuing through the end of the COVID-19 federal public health emergency, Blue Cross will cover the cost of a limited number of at-home rapid COVID-19 tests. This coverage applies to members who have health insurance either through their employer or the individual market for over-the-counter (retail) COVID-19 tests that have emergency use authorization by the FDA- Opens in a new window for self-administered testing that can be read at home. 

This does not apply to Medicare or Minnesota Health Care Program (Medicaid, MinnesotaCare) plans.

There is no change to at-home testing coverage for Minnesota Health Care Program (Medicaid, MinnesotaCare) members. These members may continue to receive at-home rapid tests at no cost with an order from a licensed health care professional.

In order to receive an at-home test at no cost, bring the test kit to the pharmacy counter (not the front registers) at a preferred pharmacy and show your member ID card or pharmacy benefit card.

Note: If you do pay up-front for an at-home test, you must manually submit a form for reimbursement. See the FAQ below for detailed directions.  

Pharmacies will be able to ship COVID-19 at-home tests to members. Please call your preferred pharmacy to have a no-cost test shipped to your home under your pharmacy benefit.

For all health plan members who have insurance either through their employer or the individual market, Coupe will cover up to eight tests every 30 days, per member.
